Dub FX – Thinking Clear LP

Dub FX brings us elements of Drum and Bass, Dub, Reggae and Breaks on the Thinking Clear LP. There’s much variation on this album, something for everyone.  I’ve only felt the need to pull out a few, possibly because I can’t get anywhere else on the album for listening to ‘Where I belong’ on repeat. Album can be listened to here >>> Preview

Buy – Thinking Clear LP

Dub FX – Birds and the Bees

A steaming piece which frantically squeezes in almost all elements of Drum and Bass. This’ll be alright for some but might rub wanting a more sustained journey into style the wrong way. For me this track shines at 3 mins 😉

Dub FX – Road to Babylon

Dancehall / Drum and Bass fusion, injected with pure fire and doses of jazz in places.

Dub FX – Heatwave

Pacy Dub piece, featuring some strong horn and brass action.

Dub FX – Unwind

Hip-Hop beatbox driven, jazz piano piece which is wistful with latent strings working the back.

Dub FX – Where I belong

Soulful Jazz vibes drench the initial stages of this special piece, which switches nicly in the mix for a choppy little include.

Various Artists – Bryan Gee Presents: Liquid V Club Sessions, Vol. 6 [Liquid V]

Unmissable selection for all those that are a regular of Bryan Gee’s V Recordings Podcast series. Random Movement – Savage Brutus

Soul vibes shine through on this deep down gut shaking roller.

Dramatic – Together Tonight feat. dbaudio

Big band feels intro this piece, warrant instant smiles as the piece rushes through

Simplification & Translate – Tonight L Side Remix

A thick, squelchy basslines permeates this stepping remix. Shout sharp synth pieces through and vocal washes but this piece is about that grimacing bassline.

Intelligent Manners – Dem Things

Superb guttal bassline skips over a striding rhythm and transitions through into some a gentler synth patterns before rattling on into the groove again.

L Side – Sweet Blues

Just as it’s named on the tin. L Side provides a tasty little piece of fast soul music

Paul T & Edward Oberon – Tonights the Night

Rushing jazz roller, with an piano energy injection and wrapping vocals.

Phase 2 – One Time

A deep silky rolling piece

Dramatic – So Crazy

Hypnotic jazz sweeps through this piece.

Rowpieces – Retreat

Rowpieces wraps hi layers and vocals over this dreamy, soul driven piece and underpins with some big bassline growls. Retreat switches through nicely, provoking thought in the rythum.

Jaybee, Dave Owen & D-Lo – SXSW

The duo has pieced tighter a cracking piece of drum and bass fusion. SXSW merges elements of soulful and menacing Drum and Bass.

Bailey – Stargazing Ft.Tali

Baileys rushing jazz roller is blessed by the Tali creating a soundscape which guarantees an uncontainable feel good ride

Intelligent Manners – How Sweet It Is

A deep, yet playful piece. Warm feelings 😉

Rowpieces & Identified – Falling

Soul undercurrents are wrapped by high layers and dreamy, yearning vocals and grounded by a low down Rowpieces bassline.

L-Side – I Wish

L-side brings forth the depths, again, on this subtle, rushing, deep soundscape

Duoscience – Night Traffic

Big band styles smash through on this piece, as does the occasional heavy duty bassline, added in for good measure, making this a quality experience.

SoS – Mixitup2016 entry – dubzoo.com

I thought it was nicely poetic that my selection entry to the dubzoo.com 2016 mix should be opened up with a (very loose) Panda reference and one of my instant likes from Conducts new LP – Borderlands, Grand Panjadrum on BMTM. Panja almost sounds like Panda, right?

Conducts – Panjadrum is a wonderfully haunting yet uplifting piece, released as part of the duos Borderlands LP, on BMTM (http://www.blumarten.com/product/conduct-borderlands-lp/). Guitars play over a BIG lazy kick drum which takes its time through.  Yes, I did get teary to this, first time.  Moving on and the head nod to BMTM continues with the Mellow soundscape and solid beats of Blu Mar Ten – 5 Summers followed by Frederic Robinsons take on Keenos – Nocturne.

With the scene set its time for some jazzy rollers from Roy Green and Protones – Freshy > Serem – Goldilocks > Macca & Los Contreras – Love and Skeletone – Make it Move. There’s some romance for sure in that pacy little furore, followed up by a truly great new relese form The Vanguard Project – Want You Back and the Jazz rusher from Paul Su – This is Jazz.

Here, the mix selection transitions for some deepness. Leading the charge is Alix Perez – Maiden, with some loving vocal work and sweet crunchy percussion. A steady bass melody steps through at ease to create a thoroughly laid back Ballard type piece. The pace and vibe is brought back further with Oaks – Untitled 09 and into the dark business that is the collab between Ailx Perez and Skeptical – Elephant Dreams.  The deep intensity continues through Aldred – Just a Moment into the thoroughly deep piece from Philth – Earth.  Earth is full of wistful emotion, with a strong element of mournfulness, captured in the synth melody and slow rise and fall of orchestral notes.

A short uplift on Logistics – Okiwa is proceeded by another Alix Perez track – Recall and Reflect, a deeply sexy piece in his EP of the same name for Exit Records. The soundscape is then blessed with the wonderfully dub drenched collab form Digital, Audio Habitat & Mad Vibes – Maintain and through into G.H.O.S.T’s rugged beat driven piece – One.

At the end now and Frederic Robinson returns to give Royalstons – Jungle Gone Down his trademark treatment before the mix ends on the uplifting spiritualism of The Vanguard Projects – All that I Need (feat Pat Fuggoni)

SoS – June 2016

June in the UK! Quite some heartbreak probably impacted this selection. It all kicks off positive though. The playful xylophone of Artificial Intelligences – Rizon lifts spirits before the brooding tone of the mix begins. I recently went on a G.H.O.S.T shopping spree so expect this to be present. More ‘look back’ actions meant that I had a glimpse into Alix Perez’s back catalogue and found myself collecting some missed Exit Records.

After this first 10 mins we find ourselves in the midst of a sublime Calibre piece – Under Bars . The warm bassline and light piano of this piece leads nicely into the deep minimalist textures of Pennygiles – Lie Through Me before the mix lifts into a triad of jazz rollers from The Vanguard Project, Big Bud and Rowpieces.

Following the Rowpieces we sink down nicely into Alix Perez – Recall and Reflect a deeply sexy piece in his EP of the same name for Exit Records. This moves into G.H.O.S.T – Viracohca. Meditative at its core yet with the occasional restrained burst, Viracohca lifts and grounds simultaneously. Up next Bop works through his style on an emotive remix of The Erised – Pray, amplifying some pure romance whilst keeping the overall vibes restrained and mature.

Following that dreamy immersion it’s time to level it all out with some real vibes. Facing Jinx – Drifting I’m not afraid to say, had me in bits when I first heard it. Sorrowful strings weave through and draw into Formiks wistful vocals whilst a steady, full bodied snare is underpinned by a deep rounded bassline. This piece is then moved through into this singles B-side – Back to the Start. Another thoughtful piece requiring your meditation.

Another piece from the excellent Exit Records EP from Alix Perez – Recall and Reflect EP (Losing You) is followed by the Ivy Lab remix of Sleazy Bitch as the mix moves into its final throws. Rushing into a refix of the naughty raw-edged roller from Voltage and Nicky Blackmarkets – Courvoisier Crank and into DLR’s Jungle refix of Q Projects – Champion Sound before finalising the journey with Richie Brains – Voyage, full of old school gestures and stamped with the Exit Records quality mark.

SoS – June 2016 (Ivy Lab, Nicky Blackmarket, DLR, Q Project, Richie Brains)

Random Movement – Sleazy Bitch (Ivy Lab Remix) – http://fokuzrecordings.com/fokuz-recordings-presents-hateful-eighty/

The originally deep, sleazy roller from Random Movement gets the Ivy Lab treatment. This track has also had a Lenzman remix. All three versions sublime.

Voltage – Courvoisier Crank (Nicky Blackmarket Remix) – https://www.beatport.com/track/courvoisier-crank-voltage-and-nicky-blackmarket-remix/7932116

I was late to this one. A naughty little roller with a raw edge, cranked up by the Nicky Blackmarket.

Q Project – Champion Sound (DLR 2016 Jungle Refix) – https://ciarecords1.bandcamp.com/album/ciaqslps001-cia-20-album-sampler

This refix is a lovingly crafted headnod to the original classic. Brilliant vibes.

Voyage – Richie Brains – https://exitrecordsuk.bandcamp.com/album/exit-lp016-richie-brains-who-is-richie-brains-lp

From the Exit Records – Who is Richie Brains LP. This piece is full of old school gestures and stamped with the Exit quality mark

SoS – May 2016

Opening up with Conducts B-Side to the Bat Country release on Blu Mar Ten Music, Betas Error. A steady, whimsical piece with sinister under currents, Betas Error is a nice thought provoker before the launch into Garrison Law. Setting the scene for the next 20+ mins Garrison Law features a menacing stab bassline, underpinned by some furiously rushing percussion. A solid collaboration from masters Digital, Sprint and Response on V Recordings.

Sticking with the V Recordings for the next piece, Garrison Law is followed by the b-side to Fats Brand New Style release, Inner Soul. With Serum, underpinning some strong variation on percussion with strong b-line frequencies and Fats prophesying over, Inner Soul is a gem of a ride. At this point the mix takes a little look back with the beefy Total Science piece, Squash and then into the Med School archives on Trisector – Morning Rain (Also on Medschool 10 Years), with a nice deep bass anchor.

There’s a small rest bite after Morning Rain on Blu Mar Ten and Strays serene collab – Blind Soul through into some quirky pressure from Electrosoul System on Harder Than Sox Travel before entering into a steaming jump up remix of Aphrodite’s classic, King of the Beats. Levalas remix is closely followed by the raw filth of Impish – So Sick, another great piece to come out of Fokuz Recordings. Following that earlier frenzy it was time to pull bring in some light and soul to the mix.

Command Strange – Watcha Doing brings the funk before moving through to Zero T’s blissful, So Close, followed by the enveloping layers of Saint Blood from Med School talent Luca. Through the heady optimism that is Saint Blood, the darker side of Jazz inspired Drum and is brought by DJ SS on Shadows before one quarter of Philths Elements EP filters through, a intelligent and emotive aural portrait of Earth.

Earth is followed by the playful vibes of Frederic Robinson, on the remix of Keeno – Nocturne before the crisp percussion of Anile – Depths rolls in followed by one of six wonderful pieces on the Alix Perez and Ivy Lab EP – Arkestra. The Last Light is a cheeky little jazz roller, with a bassline and organ ride that stretch out like a cat on a sunshine drenched lawn.

As the mix comes to a close there’s time for one from the Logistics LP, Electric Sun (Tell Me True) and a quick head bow to Blu Mar Tens – Believe Me before moving into the a side of the track featured at the beginning of the mix. Conducts Bat Country, with its haunting guitars, choppy beats and bass play paints a refreshing drum and bass soundscape.

Various Artists – Xperiments EP [Vivid Sounds]

This Vivid Sounds EP features four varying pieces all with their merits but it’s hard not to lay some significant praise on the final piece by Taelimb. Don’t Vote is well composed with some dynamic percussion and a basement level, twisting bassline.

Now for the remaining three of the EP. From the dark sinister side comes Detour – Your Love, which is half time by heart, with the odd rush of snare and a thick bassline. The lightest/kindest on the EP is Basic Forces – Out Of The Box, with an almost too high snare the bassline is big and slow and finally there’s the ultraviolent Dungeon Master – Half Grid, which will rip your skin from your flesh and DE atomise your bones should you fancy it.
