Visual Signals – #1

Music aside, there’s extra special care taken when selecting an image for SoS mixcasts. Now in it’s second year there’s enough of them to give the images and their creators a special mention.

Olamoszumanska – Foggy Harbour Bridge this morning

A thoroughly haunting image of Sydney Harbour Bridge engulfed in fog. Curved lines and symmetry is poetry in this moment and the looming girder structure in the background just oozes other worldly intimidation. Used for the March 2015 Signals of Sound Mixcast –

Rushnawb – Grand Central, around midnight

The size and distance portrayed in this image combined with the perfect combination of colour creates an empty dreamlike experience. The sign, No Turns, placed perfectly, to create an effect of prophecy. Used for the Feburary 2015 Signals of Sound Mixcast –

BluMarTen – Photo Bomb

From BluMarTen instagram

An ode to the London Spring time. Rich detailed colour taken of a Pigeon in flight with some nonchalant swans and their ‘ugly ducklings’. This nature is captured against the reflection of the sky on gentle waters and the human angles from the fence, with perfect representation of the North London residential architecture in the background. So much information in this wondrous spring time image. Used for the June 2015 Signals of Sound Mixcast >>>

makoto_humanelements – Beautiful Prague

Of all the blue sky and cloud pictures on Instagram Makoto really nails the contrast between brooding clouds and blue skies. Perfectly captures how I feel about the Chezh Rep sky in the capital.

So I should probably include one with an actual Human in it. There’s nothing anybody could say badly about this imaginative hair play. Perfectly off center intrigue as well. Used for the August 2015 Signals of Sound Mixcast –

Used for the July 2015 SoS Mixcast, this image looks impossible and is awe inspiring because of it –

The iconic sunrise from Sunandbass – Sardinia, there are only a few that share this memory. Lian_Kunin takes the image, already so weighted with feeling and puts it in the round. For me, symbolising that we can all return next year.

A combination image where I wanted to exaggerate the colours of Autumn. Front cover for the October 2015 mixcast –

Conrank – Ma Fan

Conrank brings some heavy steppers and classy sample work on his new Ma Fan LP. Entry track, Tongues is a strong stepping dub, with some clever little bongo work and scattered vocal chop work. Buy >

From the cheeky side of the album comes ‘Problems’, seeking to push the rhythms into a 4th Dimension. Further into the end of the album Conrank seeks to push bended soundscapes even further, with the sounds of Tech Ft. Mad Zach, madness on this one. Also check the Mad Zach remix of Jetlaggin for further cerebral challenges.

Floor dominators like JetLaggin with its strong synth brass and Beat the Block (An SoS favourite), with its relentlessly ripping synth bassline will play their part on the dancefloor. Finally a mention should go to the variation in production for Exhale Therapy which is packed to the brim with DJ Shadow led samples, all underpinned by Conranks deep drum work.

SAAL – Signs (Blu Mar Ten remix)

Deep, Dark atmospherics are driven by strong, menacing kicks on Blu Mar Tens remix of SAAL – Signs. Throughout the piece, vocal snips pepper over, whilst a deliciously sinister bassline weaves in and out the soundscape. Blu Mar Ten would also like to add that – ‘There are very strong scientific links between boot cut jeans & everything negative in this world’ and that ladies promoting the wearing of such items should not be allowed to vote.

Aquasky – Shadow Era EP.1 (Blessed sounds from the days of Moving Shadow)

The first of a two part journey into the early Aquasky sound, pure blessings at ever turn. Purchase >

Aquasky – Images

Jazzy vibes awash this deep soundscape, with a pure sub-bassline and some gorgeous drum and chopper percussion hits. Stay tuned to the second part of this piece for some pure lift.

Art of Noise – Crusoe (Aquasky Remix)

Enter a crisp choppy rhythm into a hypnotic jazz soaked vibe. With light layers and melocholy samples this Aquasky Remix will spin you into a meditative state.

Aquasky – Kuana

Some classic Aquasky sounds are present here. A playful key line accompanied by a laid back organ ride.  Kuana is laiden with soul funk influence, cheeky percussion and a thick treacly bassline.

Aquasky – Moondance (Top Pick)

Plenty of old school feeling in this piece and a low, low down bassline. Sit back and let the soothing sax synth, gently engulf those senses.

Omni Trio – Who Are You (Aquasky Remix)

I’m guilty of being biased here. This was one of my early favourites, making me who I am today. A sublime bassline and angelic layers, all accompanied by some hypnotic xylophone pepper this old classic.

Aquasky – Shadow Era pt2 (Emmersive soundscapes and deep basslines from the times of Moving Shadow)

Aquasky share tracks from their early years during the Moving Shadow era.  So many hypnotic feels on this.  Although the Krust remix at the top was excellent, Jazz Bell wins it for that bassline and overall funked up sublime feel. >>> Buy

Aquasky – Dezires (DJ Krust Remix)

The DJ Krust Remix of desire sets into deep gentle percussive ride. A testimony to the early sound, featuring wrapping layers, which immerse the individual into a dreamlike soundscape.

Sneaker Pimps – Tesko Suicide (Aquasky Remix)

The Aquasky remix of Tesko Suicide weaves in with lush layers and modular synth drops which bend a hypnotic groove. When the breaks take over a steady scaled key melody is underpinned by nice warm bass slabs which are later overflown with a melancholy simulated accordion synth.

Larcany – Who Are You (Aquasky Remix)

Some, sweet, crisp and snappy drum work on the remix here all worked strongly underneath by a funky sub low bassline.

Plane Invaders – Aquasky (Top Pick)

Warm synths and playful rising key patterns intro Plane Invaders. As the progressive drum patterns roll into the fray a blessed sub bass line enters to submerse the listener. Some nice wooden percussion patters over the higher levels of Plane Invaders adding to the intrigue.

Force Of Nature – Jazz Bell (Aquasky Remix)

The Aquasky remix of Jazz Bell takes the listener down with a deep dominant bassline whilst percussive work is raw on the snare and hi-hat space as synth layers wash over. Throughout the use of effect to the consistent messaging sample.

Aquasky – Orange Dust

Amen inspired drumwork from the outset of Orange Dust sets an old school vibe before the release of an intoxicated synth pattern and some signature Aquasky bass slabs. Aquasky open and close the gate on the hypnotic pattern whilst splicing in light glass tones.

Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore (Blessed vibes in Reggae, Drum and Bass and Dubstep )

Four delicious twists on Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore.  Thought the Ed Solo mix was going to get the kudos here but the Hooves Remix just smashed it.  Love the bassline.  Definitely going to be the mix for a transition to DnB. Buy >

Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore (One Drop Mix)

Janaka Selekta brings the good vibes on this Reggae piece. Laced with a cheeky trumpet underpinned by low down rumbling a bassline and some nice Dub feel reverb and Echo

Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore (Ragga DnB Mix)

Brings a Drum and Bass step to the original. Keeping it close in feel to the original before breaking in. Maintaining that cheeky sound Janaka Selekta places in a subtle ripping synth and playful synth line.

Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore (Ed Solo & Stickybuds Remix)

Ed Solo and Stickybuds take to remix duties. Rushing in with a strong snare line but maintaining to the original vibes before breaking in with a deep rolling take on the original baseline. On the second break the remix duo up the rush and head into further elaboration on the bassline

Janaka Selekta – Good Vibes ft. Jahdan Blakkamoore (Hooves Remix)

The Hooves remix kicks at the original speed before making a big old switch into a deliciously thick treacly bassline. The cheeky aspect is there again with some steel-drum-esque (?!!) synth work.
